2015: Wexford light welter Dean Walsh defeated Georgian Mihai Nyeki of Hungary to guarantee bronze at the European Championships in Bulgaria, his first major international medal. The win in Samokov came following a Last 16 victory over Romanian Florentin Niculescu. The St Ibars/St Josephs boxer would lose in the semi finals to eventual gold medalist Vitaliy Dunaytsev of Russia.
2011: London-born super featherweight Mickey Coveney fulfilled a life-long dream and won the Irish title. The Peacock Gym journeyman travelled to Mayo to take on home favourite Finbarr Eade, but upset the odds with a close 96-95 win. It was an emotional night for the boxer of Cork descent who finally got his hands on the green belt following a loss to Pajo Hyland the previous year. Coveney would lose the belt in his first defence to Anto Cacace.
