Lee Selby wants Carl Frampton Unification next
Lee Selby wants to fight new WBA featherweight champion Carl Frampton in his next bout.
The IBF 126lbs champ was ringside on Saturday to see Frampton impressively defeat Leo Santa Cruz, and is adamant that he is next in line.
The Welshman told Sky Sports that “I said before that fight I wanted the winner and Carl Frampton came through and that would be a massive, massive fight in the UK.”
“I want Frampton next, preferably before the end of the year. Frampton said before the fight he’d like to fight me and he said that in the ring after beating Santa Cruz.
“Boxing should see the best fighting the best and that’s what I want to do. I don’t want any easy warm-up fight I want to chase that big fight next.”
The Barry boxer is keen on a huge domestic unification, but promised that there would be no repeat of the bad blood which dominated the lead-up to the clash between Frampton and Bury’s Scott Quigg in February.
Selby explained that “I want those big fights and that would be massive. It is one of those huge all-British unification fights and Frampton’s already won one. He might have beaten Scott Quigg, but of course, I think – and know – I’ve got the tools to beat him.”
“We have a lot of mutual respect between us. Both of us are great fighters, both of us are World champions, so it would be a great fight. I would expect it to happen in Belfast but I would like it to happen in the Millennium Stadium if possible.”
The pair share an American adviser in PBC chief Al Haymon, and Selby’s manager Chris Sanigar has a good working relationship with the McGuigans, so a showdown would be easily made. However, with rumours of a contracted Santa Cruz rematch, as well as Frampton’s wish to have a Belfast homecoming in December (for which a Selby fight would be financially unviable), an immediate clash with the Welsh Mayweather is by no means a foregone conclusion.
