Cam O’Connell becomes first man to stop Molnar

It mightn’t have been the career-defining war that Cam O’Connell has been searching for, but the Irish-Canadian fighter certainly had an entertaining fire-fight with Bence Molnar last night in Edmonton.

Topping the bill at the Shaw Conference Centre, O’Connell did what no man had done before and stopped the game Hungarian in the eight and final round.

The lightweight of Dublin descent showed good strength throughout, bullying the Central European around the ring. While Molnar threw, and landed, his fair share, his punches had nowhere near the same snap as O’Connell’s who finally forced a standing stoppage upon his exhausted opponent in the final round.

The Red Deer boxer had his man hurt in the seventh with a short right hook before closing the show the following round with an unanswered barrage.

With the win, O’Connell moves to 11(7)-1(0), while the admirable Molnar, a former foe of Belfast Paul Hyland Jr, falls to 16(9)-8(1).
