It’s Wake or Guzman next for Frampton’s old IBF title
One of either Shingo Wake or Jonathan Guzman will replace Carl Frampton as IBF super bantamweight Champion of the World.
The IBF have ordered the Japanese fighter, who was regularly mentioned anytime possible Frampton foes were being discussed over the year, and the Dominican knockout artist to fight for the title vacated by ‘The Jackal’.
The fighters are ranked #1 and #2 by the sanctioning body, respectively and in that regard it’s an obvious bout to make.
Frampton was ordered to defend against Wake (20-4-2) who has won his last 10 and stopped seven of his last eight opponents en route to mandatory position by the IBF, but has moved up to featherweight accepting a mega WBA world title fight with Leo Santa Cruz and thus vacated.
‘The Jackal’ claimed the strap by defeating Kiko Martinez in a purpose built stadium in Belfast in September 2014 before defending it in ruthless fashion against Chris Avalos in February of the following year.
The Belfast fighter then headed Stateside and retained his title with a points win over Alejandro Gonzalez jr, before adding the WBA super bantamweight title to his collection with victory in a massive clash with Scott Quigg early this year.
Frampton now leaves the super bantamweight division and both titles behind in a bid to become a two weight World champ and will fight Leo Santa Cruz in New York on July 30.
