Tennyson quashes ‘too much too soon’ talk
‘He is still only 22’, ‘he was against a seasoned operator in Walsh’, ‘it may have been a jump too soon’: just some of the sound bytes doing the rounds after James Tennyson came up short in the British featherweight title fight with Ryan Walsh in London on Saturday night.
However, Tennyson doesn’t believe the British title and a bout with 30 year old Walsh was too much too soon.
Even after being stopped by his fellow Frank Warren-promoted puncher, ‘Tenny’ feels he has the capabilities to beat the champion.
“I don’t think it was a jump up for me,” Tennyson said post fight.
“Walsh is a good fighter, I feel if I was on top of my game I could have beaten him, but I just didn’t feel right. When he went southpaw I was catching him with the straight right down the fight that wasn’t a problem. Maybe I could have used the jab more and picked clear shots.”
Tennyson, who was dropped in the second and stopped within five claims he just didn’t feel right on the night and told his corner as much early on.
“I never felt right. I felt slow and tired, not taking anything away from him the best man won on the night, but that is how I felt. There are better days ahead I will be back,” he continued before discussing the time he hit the canvas.
“I wanted to continue I was up from eight. The first one was low the second wasn’t.”
