Frampton I want to win the WBA featherweight title back for Barry
Carl Frampton wants to win the WBA featherweight title back for Barry McGuigan by beating a Cruz.
‘The Jackal’s’ mentor was Ireland’s last featherweight champion of the world and was once a custodian of the WBA title Frampton challenges Leo Santa Cruz for this Summer.
Indeed, it seems Ireland’s first ever unified World champion will challenge for the strap in New York 30 years and four days after the Irish-boxing legend lost the belt in an out door clash in the blistering Las Vegas heat.
Steve Cruz was the ‘Clone Cyclone’s’ defeator that day and it is not lost on Frampton that the biggest fight of his career comes against Leo Santa Cruz.
Irish boxing’s leading light at present seems keen to get some form of revenge for one of Ireland’s greatest and certainly most loved punchers.
“It’s a really special opportunity, the kind of fight that dreams are made of – and its an opportunity to win the World belt that my manager Barry McGuigan won in 1985,” Frampton said in his Sunday Life column.
“It’s 30 years since Barry lost the title in Las Vegas to Steve Cruz and now I’m fighting a Cruz for the same title in the States. It’s going to bring back a lot of memories for people.
“Some will be saying that Barry lost to a Cruz in America and maybe I will. But I am going there with a lot of confidence. I want to win the title back for Barry it would be a great part of the journey we have been on since I turned pro.”
