IBF say Frampton has to face Shingo Wake or lose the title

Carl Frampton has to face Shingo Wake next or lose his IBF super bantamweight title.

While Guillermo Rigondeaux is mandatory for ‘The Jackal’s’ recently acquired WBA belt the Japanese is next in line for the Belfast fighters IBF strap.

Indeed, Wake was next in line prior to the unification clash with Scott Quigg, which Frampton won on points in Manchester on Saturday night, but stepped aside to let the massive pay per view bout play out.

The IBF told World Boxing News that Wake will be next to challenge for the IBF title suggesting Frampton will have to vacate if he doesn’t take on the Japanese.

“Frampton vs. Quigg was approved by the IBF with the condition that the winner must fight IBF mandatory challenger Shingo Wake,” IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker pointed out to WBN on Thursday, before adding: “We have not called for a purse bid.”

Unlike the WBA, who ‘Rigo’ is the mandatory challenger for, the IBF haven’t set a date for a fight and the fact purse bids haven’t been called suggests talks may be underway.

Cyclone could be keeping their options open or leaning toward a Wake defence in case a bout with Leo Santa Cruz doesn’t come to fruition straight away.
