Andy Lee : Saunders doesn’t want a rematch he knows he got away with it

Billy Joe Saunders doesn’t want a repeat with Andy Lee according to the fighter he defeated to fulfil his World title dream last December.

The English southpaw unbuckled the WBO Middleweight World title from around the waist of the Limerick middleweight and Irish favourite thanks to a majority points win in Manchester late last year.

Saunders talked positively a return post victory as well as name dropping big name fighters including the much avoided Gennady Golovkin.

However, Lee claims fellow southpaw Saunders has turned down the offer of a rematch, suggesting the Frank Warren promoted middleweight knows he ‘got away with it’ last time out despite registering two early knock downs.

“We have enquired about a rematch and he was the number one contender, the mandatory challenger so there was no rematch clause,” Lee said.

“There wasn’t a voluntary defence so he doesn’t want it and I can understand that. That says enough in itself, that he got away with it and you could see in the last few rounds he was boxing in his shell and didn’t want to mix or trade and he knew he had the fight won off those two knock-downs earlier in the fight.”
