Kavanagh: We can talk about possible World titles after February 6
Jamie Kavanagh wants to try the WBO lightweight European title on for size before sizing up any potential World title shots.
‘The Nuisance’ fights Portugal’s Antonio Joao Bento for the vacant strap on the February 6 Clash of the Clans card aware that victory won’t just see him earn his first career title but a World ranking too.
Defeat Bento at the National Stadium and the 25 year old will be eligible to challenge for the WBO lightweight World title a strap Stephen Ormond also has in his sights.
Take into account one of either current champion Terry Flanagan and Derry Matthews will be in possession of the title come Valentines day and the fact both are signed to Frank Warren, who has a good working relationship with Kavanagh’s promoters MGM and World title talk is inevitable.
However, the former Wild Card and Golden Boy puncher isn’t keen to look beyond the challenge at hand and his prime focus is on Bento, February 6 and the WBO European title.
“It is a really big fight for me,” Kavanagh told Irish-boxing.com.
“Listen just to fight at home is big deal for me, but to fight for a belt is icing on the cake. It was bit of surprise but I’m happy with the fight. It puts me in great position in terms of ranking and moving my career forward, but I’m concentrating on this fight first then I’ll be looking in that direction,” he added
“It doesn’t get any bigger that world title, but I have this one to deal with first.”
