The Race for RIO continues in 2016

Russia and Cuba lead the way in the race for qualification for Rio 2016 with 15 boxers through to the 31st Olympiad. Russia commands pole position with eight qualified.

Ireland, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are in joint 3rd spot with four each qualified. Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Steven Donnelly, and Joe Ward will represent Ireland in Rio next August, with Ward and Donnelly making their Olympic debuts and Barnes and Conlan appearing in their third and second successive Olympic Games.

At this juncture – and 286 boxers compete at each Olympics – Ireland leads the way for western Europe with four – 6.6% of the total – over the line.

Overall, Europe has secured 30 berths – 50% of the total – so far. Asia has 13 places, the Americas 12 and Africa 5.

Brazil currently have one boxer qualified outright. However, the Brazilians will be entitled to six places, five male and one female, as the host nation, which effectively means they have seven qualified.

The final (male) qualifier – “last chance saloon” – will be hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan next June.
