McDonagh ready to become Irish boxing’s extra terrestrial

Some suggest Peter McDonagh’s dress sense is out of this World, but the veteran Irish puncher claims his funky shirts will not be the only thing alien about him 2016.

The three weight Irish champion claims he is the Bernard Hopkins of Irish boxing and will like ‘The Alien’ win titles at a non fashionable age over the coming 12 months.

Granted at 38 Peter McDonagh is only a baby in comparison to the 50 year old future Hall of Famer and while the American has been competing against legendary names for World title over an illustrious career, the Galway man has flirted with journey man status between challenging for European, Southern Area and Irish honours.

However, when McDonagh makes the link he isn’t indicating he can like Hopkins become a World renowned World champion who will go down as an all time great, but is suggesting his twilight will be spent in the Irish spot light.

“I will become the Irish Bernard Hopkins in 2016,” the current Irish welterweight champion told Irish-boxing.com.

McDonagh’s story has been somewhat Cinderella over the last few years. The fighter with 28 defeats on his record is unbeaten since 2013 and has collected two Irish titles in a run of eight wins.

He starts 2016 on the back of a televised and high profile Irish title win over Dean Byrne and has stated his desire to fight Paulie Malignaggi for the EBU European title.

The MGM fighter, who will trade leather in Dublin on February 6, believes everything is finally falling into to place for him.

“I realy beleve now I’m starting to come into my own at the age of 38. I feel better than ever now and boxing better. I’m coming off eight wins and three titles in last two years. I have a great team around me in MGM and I really believe next year is my year,” he added.

“In boxing I’ve done my years of learning. A lot of people would have chucked the towel in, but I believe if you keep at it and keep working you deserve to dream. There are a few more belts I want in boxing yet and I plan to try and get them in 2016.”
