Returning Delaney happy with hard-fought win

JP Delaney had a tough win last night in the semi-finals of the National Elite Championships.

The Emerald light heavyweight overcame Arklow veteran Sean Allen, administering a count in the first round.

Afterwards Delaney spoke to irish-boxing.com and admitted that “it was a tough fight, he was very awkward, he just kept coming. I found it very hard to get good shots off on him.”

Nevertheless the mature Belfast man took positives from the victory, reasoning that “it’s good to grind out a performance, and I ground it out and got the win.”

“I’m only back now, I was out of the game for two years, and this is my second championships back – the Ulster Seniors were my first.”

“I’m going to keep improving every fight”

Delaney faces Navan’s Chris Blaney in Friday’s final and expects a tough fight as “the two of us know each other a lot, we’ve boxed each other a lot”

“He beat me the first time and I beat him twice after that, so he’ll be looking to get revenge.”
