European Youth Championships – Day 4 Results
By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer
Five Irish boxers will compete for at least bronze at the European Youth Championships in Kolobrzeg, Poland tomorrow.
Michael Nevin and James McGiven today showed their class to join John Joyce, Willie Donoghue and Stephen McKenna in the quarter-finals.
Adam Kelly bowed out at the last-16 stage of the 38-nation tournament this afternoon.
McGivern beat Finland’s Rasmus Bergman. The Irish southpaw put in a composed three rounds against the Finish lightweight to advance.
Nevin, showcasing superior footwork, shot selection and ring craft, kept French welter Djessim Boulefkhad on the end of his left jab for the nine minutes they shared in the ring, the ex European Schoolboy and Junior champion throwing in three and four-punch combinations into the bargain to seal an impressive decision.
Nevin is aiming for a unique Continental hat-trick in Poland. So far, his performances have been outstanding.
Kelly shaded the first round against Artur Prygoga, but the Ukrainian light-welter was adjudged to have won the last two frames to progress from a very close encounter.
Tomorrow is last-eight day in Kolobrzeg. Thursday is a rest day. The semi-finals and finals will be held on Friday and Saturday.
