Sean McComb confident of Selimov revenge at World Championships

Belfast lightweight Sean McComb is aiming to rule the World next week in Doha, Qatar. The Holy Trinity boxer fights at the AIBA World Championships and has Olympic qualification on his mind, and not even Azeri superstar Albert Selimov can get in his way.

The slick and rangy southpaw spoke to the Irish News from Ireland’s training base in Assisi, Italy, where they have been in deep preparations for the eighteenth edition of the championships.

A confident McComb reasoned that “it’s a massive ask to get into the medal stages, but I know I can do it. I just have to go out there and prove it.”

In Assisi, McComb has been sparring Albert Selimov who narrowly defeated him in the semi finals of the European Games back in June, and the Ulster man would like another crack at the decorated amateur star – although he doubts the feeling is mutual.

“I wouldn’t mind [fighting Selimov]. I’d like to get a few fights under my belt first, and I know for a fact he’ll not want to fight me.”

“At the European Games medal ceremony after his final he said ‘you, me, final’. He said I was his hardest opponent, and he knows I’ll only get better.”

Boxing at the Lusail Multi-Purpose Sports Hall in Doha, Qatar begins next Tuesday and the final stages will be available to be viewed live on Boxnation (Sky channel 438).
