TJ Doheny ready to prove Frampton, Quigg, Cruz and co should fear him
TJ Doheny is ready to become a name in one of the most exciting divisions in World boxing, and claims that he will make the more noted super bantamweights sit up and take note this weekend.
The Australia-based Laois native finally gets the test he has been pushing for when he faces two weight World champ Denkaosan Kaovichit in Alexandria Basketball Stadium, Perry Park, New South Wales on Saturday.
Doheny, who holds an amateur win over Carl Frampton, and claimed the PABA title, once held by former Bernard Dunne destroyer Poonsawat, within five fights, initially wanted to fight Mike Tawatchai after he lost to Shingo Wake in an IBF Eliminator for the right to become Frampton’s mandatory.
However, Tawatchai wasn’t interested and Denkaosan accepted the challenge. Doheny isn’t too perturbed as he believes the Thai fighter, who is a veteran of over 50 title fights- eight of which where World title fights, gives him the chance to make a significant statement and prove he is World level.
Doheny is keen to make the likes of Scott Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz and indeed Frampton sit up and take note.
“I’m really looking forward to this test as it’s the kind of fight I’ve been calling for all year but as pro boxing goes you don’t always get what you want. We originally looked to fight Mike Tawatchai, who recently fought Shingo Wake for the IBF eliminator, but they didn’t want it, so they came back with the next best thing in Denkaosan,” Doheny told irish-boxing.com.
“It is a great chance to show what I’m about and prove that I am the real deal and one to be feared in the super bantamweight division.”
Denkaosan has spent most of his 60 plus fight career at lighter weights but has only lost at World elite level and Doheny knows Saturday provides both an opportunity and a test.
“Being a former world champ I expect him to be very experienced. He will know how to travel and try put it on me. It is the kind of opportunity I’ve been working toward and one I know I deserve.
