Celtic Champ James Tennyson closing in on British Title shot
Big punching super featherweight James Tennyson [13(10)-1(1)] is approaching his upcoming fight with the belief that he is one win away from a British Title shot. The Belfast youngster, 22, faces Georgian gatekeeper, George Gachechiladze [18(11)-20(11)-1], on a Mark Dunlop-promoted diner show at the Europa Hotel on October 17th.
‘The Assassin’ recently put himself in line for a shot at the British honours by winning the BBBoC Celtic title against former Carl Frampton opponent, Kris Hughes. Should he win next month, the hotshot is targeting an immediate shot at the the belt which is soon to be vacated by the World title-chasing Liam Walsh.
Ahead of his Europa bout, Tennyson spoke to the Belfast Newsletter and explained that “I am getting very close to that British title fight – so I have to win. I am totally focused on Gachechiladze and he is the only thing on my mind at the minute.”
“I am looking forward to October 17 and if I get a win there, we will be looking at a shot at the British title.”
The power-puncher, however, knows the danger of overlooking opponents, and is giving the Georgian his full respect, noting that “Marc McCullough lost recently and that was a warning to the rest of us, that anything can happen at any time, so we have to be on our game.”
