Kavanagh: I will be ready for Ormond and co once I find my feet in London

THE lightweight division in Ireland and Britain is top heavy with big names.

Across the water you have the likes of Anthony Crolla, Terry Flanagan, Kevin Mitchell, Derry Matthews and even Ricky Burns. In Ireland Stephen Ormond is the leading lightweight light, but there are a number of prospects such as Jono Carroll, Declan Geraghty, James Fryers and Paul Hyland Jr, who have all competed at the weight and are ready to join the mix.

Former Golden Boy and Wild Card fighter Jamie Kavanagh has relocated to London and is keen grab some of the 130lb spot light and believes he can make a strong division even more exciting.

The Dubliner claims after a few fights to find his feet he will be ready for big lightweight names in Ireland or Britain.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to fighting this side of the pond as there are many names that I can mix it up with. A few boxers stand out above the rest to me, the likes of Anthony Crolla, Kevin Mitchell, Terry Flanagan, Steven Ormond and Derry Mathews, so give me a two or three fights to return to my boxing ways back here in Europe and I’d like to be fighting those guys,” Kavanagh told WBN.

“I believe the lightweight division is the strongest division in the UK and Ireland, so I’m here and looking to make it even better,”

When Kavanagh says he wants three fights before seeking bouts with the bigger lightweight names it’s not that he doesn’t feel capable it is more a case of he wants to test the waters on this side of the Atlantic.

When speaking to Irish-boxing.com he said:

“I’ve been in with a lot of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans you have seen from the Jamie Colon and Frampton fight they are no joke. Where does it put me in terms of coming home? I’m not sure as you know my whole career has been in the States. This is new too me, it’s exciting but a whole new approach. I’d just like to find myself on European soil and then steam ahead.”
