Frampton: Quigg fight has to happen now-but he has to remember who the champ is
AFTER watching a demolition job by Carl Frampton last night Scott Quigg might be having second thoughts about sharing a ring with his nemesis, but the Belfast fighter says its a fight that has to happen- and happen now.
In fairness to the Matchroom promoted fighter, who was ringside in Belfast on Saturday night, he reiterated both his desire to trade leather with the IBF super bantamweight champion of the World and his belief he would beat Frampton.
It seems a fight that has been brewing longer than some very expensive whiskeys and Framtpon believes now is the time break open the barrel and enjoy the fruits of waiting till things came to the boyle.
“I think now is the perfect moment to do it. It has to happen now, it should happen now,” he said at the post fight press conference before suggesting he wanted to punish Quigg for denying him a British title shot.
“I always said from the start of my career I wanted to win a British title, and he never let me fight for a British title. I’m obviously well past that now.
“The fight’s been brewing. Luckily I haven’t been beaten and he’s had a couple of draws. It’s time to happen now, it has to happen now.”
Such is the history between the pair, that their is a personal element to a bout with ‘Sky hype job Quigg’ for Frampton. Verbal sparring has gone on for years with both accusing each other of not wanting the clash at various stages.
However, it couldn’t be clearer at this point in time that the fans want it, the fighters want, the teams want it and the TV companies want it- so the only reason a contract won’t be signed is because of stumbling blocks in the business and TV elements of the fight.
And Frampton suggests that considering he only holds the WBA regular title and not a legitimate World crown Quigg should remember he is the challenger come talks time.
“People need to understand that this is Scott Quigg fighting for my world title. It’s not a unification fight. I don’t believe it is. It’s him fighting for my IBF title.
I would love it. I think Scott wants it, it’s a summer showdown between the both of us. It’s a massive fight but Scott needs to remember who’s the real world champion.”
