Macklin: I have to get back in the ring and see if I am still capable at this level

MATTHEW ‘Mack The Knife’ Macklin says he has to see if he is still able to cut it at World level before he hangs up his gloves.

Some had suggested the three time World title challenger would call it a day after a heart breaking defeat to Jorge Sebastian Hieland in the 3Arena late last year, but the World rated middleweight has elected to fight on and will return to the squared circle in his birth town of Birmingham on May 28.

Macklin claims he is excited about returning and trying to get back on the World title track. The former Irish, British and European champion also suggested he feels he owes it to himself to see if he is still capable at World level after so many tough battles.

Speaking to Joe.ie Macklin said

“I was never going to jump the gun and retire in front of all the cameras after the fight. I’m quite level-headed so I took some time to think about it but it was a genuine possibility that I wouldn’t fight again.

“But being given the chance to get back in the ring and see whether or not I’m truly able to compete at this level is something that I feel I have to do.”

“Obviously it was tough coming off my last loss to Heiland but I’m really excited to be given the chance to come back and try to get back on track.”
