Lee fulfills promise and brings World title back to home town

ANDY Lee is fast becoming the Homecoming King.

After a brilliant and well deserved Civic Reception in Limerick City the new WBO middleweight champion of the World was paraded in front of Munster fans in a packed Thomond Park. The former St Francis amateur was on hand again to meet in greet fans as he showed of the title he won by stopping Matt Korobov on December 13 in his home town.

Lee said he was “humbled” by the turnout in Castleconnell were an estimated 1,500 people turned out to greet Ireland’s second World champ.

The champ was driven in an open top vintage car flanked by four men carrying lit pitch forks of turf and a marching band.

Following presentations Lee said “I don’t know what to say”,

“It is humbling to see the turn-out. Thank you all very much for turning out. It means the world to me.”

Lee spoke of how the people of his home town picked him up when he came home after the disappointment of the 2004 Olympics.

“I said back then if I ever won a world title I would bring it back to Castleconnell,” said Andy.
