Peter Taylor heralds Katie Taylor as a legend, Walsh says she is Ireland’s best ever athlete
KATIE Taylor’s father and coach has heralded the five time world champion as a legend.
Taylor watched from the corner as his daughter  matched Mary Kom’s  five successive AIBA World Elite titles between 2002 and 2010, claiming her twelfth major tournament gold in the process.
Wining Olympic Gold in London in 2012 most likely secured Taylor legendary status in Ireland and there is no doubt she will go down as one of if not Ireland’s greatest every sports person.
However, equaling Kom’s record means Taylor is a legend in terms of the World record books, and her father and coach couldn’t have been prouder today.
“My heart’s in bits,” said Pete. “We knew it would be a tough fight. We studied this girl and knew Katie was going to have to feint and feint. It would only be a single punch that was going to score and Katie executed brilliantly.
“We knew she had to get out quick and she executed brilliantly. Five world titles what can you say.
“It’s unbelievable… she’s a legend now.”
Irish boxing head coach Billy Walsh went one further declared: “I think we are in the midst of seeing the greatest athlete Ireland has ever produced.”
