Walsh: I was cheated out of Commonwealth gold
MICHAELA Walsh believes she was ‘cheated’ out of Commwealth Gold after suffering a split decision final reverse in Glasgow on Saturday.
Team Northern Ireland’s first ever female boxing Commonwealth medal winner lost out to ‘golden girl’ Nicola Adams and cried foul post fight.
The 20 year old, who could prove one to watch in RIO 2016, claims she was beaten by the Olympic Champion’s status and notoriety rather than the English puncher’s talent.
“It was a close fight, but I wanted it that wee bit more,” Walsh told the BBC. “I know in my heart I won the fight, I wanted it more . . . I feel as if I’ve been cheated off the gold medal.
“It’s not her (Adams) fault, obviously if it was a close fight against the Olympic champion they’re going to give it to her. I know myself I won the fight, I’d just like to say well done to Nicola.”
