Ormond getting ready for Spring Dublin bout
STEPHEN Ormond looks set to bring big time boxing to Dublin this Spring and hopes to challenge for a World title in his home town by the end of the 2014.
The man Bernard Dunne tipped to fill the void left in the capital by his retirement looks set to finally fulfil his potential in 2014.
The former amatuer standouts’ stock rose significantly after he defeated current Commonwealth champion Derry Matthews in Liverpool in December. Now Frank Warren is exploring the possibility of promoting the WBO top 10 puncher in Dublin in April.
The Celtic Gym fighter believes the time is right to bring boxing to the capital and believes he can build a base from which he can launch a world title assault.
“I went back training after a three week break and I was told to be ready for late March early April for a fight in Dublin. I am working on getting ready to fight and they are working on putting a show on in Dublin. There is big demand for a show over here and Frank (Warren) seems to be aware of that. I am hopeful it will come off. The timing is right,” Ormond said.
Ormond, 30, is know as a talented potentially world class operator within boxing circles, but claims since defeating a known fighter on TV he has been recognised on the street.
“Beating Matthews has proved bigger than I thought. Everywhere I go people have been coming up to me and saying what a great win it was. There is a big demand for boxing back in Dublin. I hope to have two fights in Dublin this year, two big wins and then fight for a World title before 2015.”
