Big Domestic Fight awaits Connor Coyle if he deals with Ortiz
Connor Coyle [16(7)-0] has hinted a big domestic fight could be just around the corner.
The Derry middleweight takes on Silverio Ortiz [37(18)-31(7)] at the Alessi Gym in Tampa, FL this coming Saturday and if he overcomes the rugged veteran he expects a big fight to be next.
The 32-year-old is scheduled to defend his recently acquired NABA title against Argentine Wenceslao Mansilla in Lowell in October but hints something bigger may be next, providing he wins when he returns to Florida this weekend.
“I think the big fights are here now, after this fight this weekend we’ll have a big fight,” he tells Irish-boxing.com before adding “Domestic fight, UK,” when pushed further.
‘The Kid’ doesn’t want to look too far down the road, fully aware victory this weekend is a must.
“I’m not overlooking my fight on Saturday. I’ll take care of business and then I’ll look ahead at what’s in front of me.”
Fighting out of Yucatan, Mexico, Ortiz’ has been a pro for more than two decades and has battled the likes of Jorge Paez, Steve Forbes, David Diaz, Hernan Ngoudjo, Humberto Soto, Pablo Cano, Radzhab Butaev and Charles Conwell.
He’s also scored big victories over Daniel Seda, Mian Hussain, Armando Robles and Mahonri Montes.
However, ‘Chamaco III’, 39, last had his hand raised in 2018, and can only boast two wins since 2016, meaning Coyle is big favourite going into the weekend’s bout. The fact the Mexican has only been stopped seven times suggests he should take the Irish fighter rounds, although the Derry favourite is hoping to win inside the distance.
“I’m expecting to dominate Ortiz I’m Saturday, and look good doing so. It’ll be nice to get another tough Mexican out of there.”
Jody Caliguire of Fire Fist Boxing Promotions, who promotes Coyle, expects the Mexican to ask questions and also claimed if his charge manages to answer them correctly he will move on to a big fight.
“Ortiz is a very tough veteran who’s beaten several good fighters, so Connor cannot take him lightly! If everything goes according to plan on September 17, we’ll be moving onto bigger fights.”
Coyle hasn’t always had it easy but has kept toiling away and earned himself a world top 10 ranking, which means he finally brings the kind of reward to the table that will tempt named fighters to risk fighting him.
He now plans to use the ranking to his advantage and progress further up the ladder.
“Great feeling being ranked #9 in the world. We’ve worked hard on getting to this, and we want to climb to the top.”
