Andy Murray’s Euro-vision
20 May 2010 – By Cormac Campbell
Cavan lightweight Andrew Murray will fight for the European title before the end of 2010, according to promoter Brian Peters.
Reigning Irish and EU champion Murray, who extended his unbeaten record to 19-0 (10KO) with a cuts stoppage victory over Englishman Amir Unsworth in Limerick last Saturday, will return to the ring next month on the undercard of Paul McCloskeys European light-welterweight title defence against Italys Guiseppe Lauri.
And ranked third in Europe, the Ulsterman knows that his shot at the bigtime lies just around the corner.
I will be back in the ring on June 11 in Belfast and hope to have a good test, he told irish-boxing.com.
The European title is the aim and I am building up towards that. Its just getting your apprenticeship sorted to be more of a seasoned pro so that when I do come to have a shot Ill be prepared.
Englands John Murray recently claimed the vacant title with victory over Gary Buckland and the Irishman is more than happy to face his namesake for the crown.
It doesnt really matter if he is there or not. You have to beat the champion to be the champion so if I have to fight him or whoever else is there then I will. Im not going to worry about what John Murray is doing, Im just preparing myself.
For the upcoming Kings Hall outing, Murray looks set to face British opposition perhaps in a bid to make Sky TV aware of his emerging talent.
Were looking at one of Tommy Gilmours men either Charlie Paul King or Mitch Prince – they are two possibilities, said Murrays promoter Brian Peters.
He is keeping busy and pushing towards a European title fight in the Fall as they say. Whether that is John Murray or whoever is in that position then.
Although Murrays clash with Unsworth lasted just two rounds before cuts interjected, Murray displayed a more commanding presence in the ring something he admitted to working on in the gym.
I have been on a wee bit of a weights programme, he admitted.
John (Breen) is getting me to set my feet and throw more right hands which is also working well. It is good to see things coming through from what you have worked at.
Breen, for his part, is happy with the way his charge is shaping up ahead of the most important year of his career.
It was a very professional performance, he said.
He boxed well and did what he had to do. He is learning the game now and doing what he has to do. I watched John Murrays last fight and he won well but it wasnt Andy Murray he was boxing. So if John Murray is still the Champion and we are ordered to fight him then happy days. Andy is number three in the European ratings so his chance should come before the end of the year.
