From Mexico to Germany to New York – Connor Coyle is ready to travel and fight this Summer
It will be more Mexican lay over than pitt stop predicts Conor Coyle [13(6)-0] as he returns to fight famous country early next month.
The Derry fighter ended a 15 month ring absence by stopping Esteban Villalba within a round in Chihuahua on April 10.
The fight served it’s purpose in terms of getting the middleweight out but Coyle and his supporters would have preferred if he got more rounds as he looks to make a charge on the 160lbs top 10 later this year.
Coyle argues a much tougher shift awaits as he returns to the in Cancun on May 7.
‘The Kid’ takes on Edgar Ortega [18(11)-12(3)] on the Mexican card. The 11 stoppage wins on ‘Nene’s’ record suggests he can punch but his resilence Coyle points to when explaining somewhat of a test awaits. Ortega has brought a host of Canada’s best prospects the distance and was there till the final bell against Conor the likes Samuel Vargas and more recently Carlos Molina.
“This next fight in Cancun is definitely a tougher fight. His last fight this year was with Carlos Molina, and he was in with a few other tough operators, including Samual Vargas. They all went the distance. So I’m definitely expecting the rounds with this boy,” Coyle told Irish-boxing.com.
His last opponent wasn’t as tough, lasting a round but there were some nerves going into the clash as Coyle explains: “I was just glad to get back into the ring after a 15month lay-off. Also going over to Mexico we were unsure what to expect, as we’ve never dealt with anything like that. So we didn’t know how the scoring would of went, especially I as I was fighting a lad from the city we were fighting in.
“We knew we had to get a knockout. Still I wanted a few rounds, but I seen the opening and I knew he wasn’t near my level, so I let the punches go.”
The former Roy Jones promoted fighter is fighting on the road as he waits for a visa to grant him access to work in American again. Indeed, if successful in Mexico for the second time in a few weeks a summer date in Germany and a fight with Dane Ali Hussein [6(2)-2(1)-1] awaits.
“We have another fight lined up in Germany then which will be in July. I’m not even sure if the opponent is confirmed, but I’m taking it one fight at a time, just trying to rebuild from my time away from the ring,” he adds before revealing America is the end goal.
“I have my interview for my P1 visa for America in August, so once we get that approved and I can get back to the States, then that’s when we’re stepping up to a bigger stage and a TV platform.
“I’m just happy to be moving again and want to thank my whole team for getting me the fights to get active again. They’ve made a lot of moves to help with that, and I’m very grateful. One man in particular, is Jody Caliguire.”
Coyle explains he didn’t get time to take in Mexico when he was there last time out but did make some very interesting and potentially fruitful connections.
“The Mexican experience wasn’t much to go by, I was literally straight over and back. The people there where nice, we went over to get the job done and straight home,” he continues.
“One thing great about it was I met up with Zab Judah’s dad, and his team. We made a great connection. They were on the fight card also, which was good. We all had breakfast after the fights and talking with Zab on FaceTime about the fights, he was talking about how tough the Irish fighters are, and about fighting Micky Ward.
“Me and my team spoke with them all for a long time, and we all agreed about us coming over for camp in New York, which will be amazing. I traveled back to Mexico City with then, and we got talking. Zab’s dad really liked how I fought, and they would like me to come over to New York to their gym for training and sparring in Brooklyn and possibly get on one of their fight cards. That could happen as early as August/September if everything goes well. I’m still staying in touch with them since I’ve been home.”
