McMahon on Casey v Rigo card
2 March 2011 – Jonny Stapleton
Former kick boxing world champion and Irelands only home based professional female boxer, Christina McMahon will kick start what she hopes will be a very successful 2011 with a fight on the March 19 world title card.
Packed with 18 Irish Kick-boxing titles, numerous European medals and a World crown, McMahons mantlepiece proves she has big time experience, but the rising Irish star admits to being nervous ahead of her third paid outing on the under-card of Willie Caseys WBA world interim title bout with Guillermo Rigondeaux.
However, the Dolphil promoted fighter, who plans to emulate her kick boxing success under the Queensbury rules form of fighting, stressed she is putting all that nervous energy into training and improving her skills before her next bout.
McMahon also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her talents on the biggest night in Irish boxing since the Bernard Dunne era. Lightening is determined to light up City West but is taking it one training session at a time.
I am very happy to be getting into the ring again and it is extra special to be on the undercard of such a big event. I know a lot of male boxers would love to have this opportunity so I am very grateful, McMahon told Irish-boxing.com.
I am trying to not let nerves get to me and trying hard to focus on improving my skill as each fight comes. I am not thinking of the event as much as thinking of how I am training at present. I am more concerned with how each session goes. I am sparring Evan Medcalfe(National Elite Senior Finalist) and Ian Fleming and I am travelling to Crumlin four days a week at the minute.
I trust my team, Dolphil to set out the plans for 2011 and hopefully get boxing at every opportunity. I dont know anything about my opponent at present. She is a Latvian girl but when all is set to happen , I’ll try do my homework on her. It usually helps me when i can get a picture in my head when training is complete so I can visualise.
