A sprinkle of experience and Donovan will have ingredients to produce sensational performances suggests Andy Lee

A little bit more experience and craft and Paddy Donovan [5(3)-0] can turn special displays into a sensational ones, suggests Andy Lee.

The majority agreed Paddy Donovan showed genuine ‘Real Deal’ potential in his victory over Jumaane Camero in Wakefield on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old took a sizable step up, but looked more than comfortable and produced some class packed rounds en route to a 60-55 win.

Pre fight the consensus was a stoppage win over a fighter, who has won a Southern Area title and asked questions of domestic level fighters much later in their journey, would be more something a to scream down a mega phone about than just shout about.

Speaking after the victory Andy Lee believes Donovan is capable of such stoppage wins. The former world champion turned respected pundit and coach, argued with a little more experience and craft his fellow Limerick man would have got a stoppage over a fighter who has never even flirted with being seriously hurt.

“I am very happy with him and pleased with the performance,” Lee told the broadcast team post the #MTKFightNight hosted clash.

“He won every round in my eyes, he hurt him on occasion and with a bit more experience and a bit more craft he will be going in for the kill and getting the stoppage.”

Lee didn’t go as overboard as some post the win, the words sensational or special were not used.

The Kronk graduate has praised Donovan’s talents previous but was practical post a career best win.

The Olympian was pleased with how is charge dealt with an early step up, but did see things he would like the older of two boxing brothers to work on.

“We knew it was going to be that type of fight. Jumaane sparred a lot with Josh Kelly in the gym so Adam Booth gave me a scouting report. What Adam said is exactly what we saw. Jumaane is emotionally and mentally tough, he’ll come to fight and he doesn’t respect what’s coming at him. He’ll just knows one way and that’s forward,” he reflected on the opponent before commenting further on Donovan’s display.

“Paddy was prepared for that and I thought he handled it well. He got caught a couple of times, his chin was a bit high on some occasions, but it’s all part of the progression. He was loading up a little at times, maybe he should have just put two or three shots together to push Jumanne on the back foot, but it’s all learning.”
