Sweden vs Ireland: History of Boxing

Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the history of man, with its beginning in ancient Greece. Since then it has, of course, evolved a lot. During the 19th and 20th century, boxing became the sport we know today, and through the years we’ve seen plenty of exciting boxing matches take place, where everything has been at stake. Looking back at the history of Swedish and Irish boxing, we see plenty of outstanding fighters, who most certainly have won a few crucial matches.

Who has won the most Olympic medals?

For its small size, Ireland has an impressive amount of medals in the Olympics. To be more precise, they have won 9 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 12 bronze medals. That’s a total of 39 medals. The Swedish boxing record in the Olympics isn’t quite as remarkable as Ireland’s, but it sure is solid. In total, the Swedes have won 14 medals distributed in 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals.

For many years, Irish boxers have been strong contenders in the Olympics and other big tournaments. Because of this, they have remained highly relevant in the world of betting. Today, betting on boxing is still very popular, and it’s easier than ever to gamble on the big fights. But perhaps it’s most widespread in Sweden, where they have nearly 150 competing casino online sites. To attract new users, the sites are racing to deliver the smoothest technological solutions and the best welcome bonuses, making Sweden an exciting place for gamblers.

Irland and Swedens’ best fighters

Sweden has several famous boxers, such as Paulo Roberto and Olle Tandberg. But boxing legend Ingemar Johansson is considered to be the country’s best fighter in history. His most well-known accomplishment is to be named the world’s heavy-weight champion in 1959-1960.

In Irish boxing history, there have also been many great fighters. Katie Taylor, Carl Frampton, Steve Collins, Rinty Monaghan and Barry McGuigan are considered to be their five best boxers. McGuigan is perhaps the most well-known Irish boxer; The Belfast Hero became featherweight world champion in 1984. He was also named BBC Sportsman of the Year in 1985. His record held 32 wins and 3 losses, and he won 28 of his fights by knockout.

Famous female boxers

Although it’s far more common today, boxing for women isn’t as new as one might think. Many believe that the British fighter Elizabeth Wilkinson, who became a champion in bare-knuckle boxing in 1722, was the first “official” female boxer. But the Irish were quick to adapt. In 1724 Elizabeth Wilkinson fought the Irish fighter Mary Welch, who is regarded to be the first Irish female boxer. And now Ireland has the incredible Katie Taylor, who keeps punching out gold in the shape of medals.

We do not know who the first Swedish female boxer is, but today Sweden has several skilful fighters. For example, Elin Cederroos – the current world champion in Super Middleweight.

As we can see, the interest in boxing is huge in both Ireland and Sweden, and both countries have an excellent boxing history.
