Furious McDonagh responds to online critics – calls out ‘jealous’ Irish fighters

A furious JJ McDonagh has called out a host of ‘jealous’ Irish fighters just hours after his defeat to Chris Eubank Jr on Friday night.

The Mullingar native pulled out of the high profile bout in Saudi Arabia following the third round of the George Groves Callum Smith WBSS final undercard after suffering a shoulder injury.

Post the bout the former two time Irish champion had to be pulled away from the fighter he just lost too after being angered when the Brighton fighter questioned his injury.

That anger hasn’t subsided – indeed it was fueled more when the older of two boxing brothers went online.

McDonagh was upset to see criticism from Irish fight fans and more particularly fellow fighters. Indeed, the furious super middle contacted Irish-Boxing.com to call out some of those punchers who he feels have disrespected him.

“For all those people out there bad mouthing me, especially Irish boxing fans and even Irish boxers.. I thought they had my back and were backing me, looks like they are not, maybe they are jealous,” a hype up McDonagh after landing in Dubai this morning. 

“Some of the fighters bad mouthing me wouldn’t lace my gloves. The likes of Jay Byrne, Chris Blaney. Look Blaney said he needed a warm up fight for this ‘shit bag’, he called me a shit bag, well I didn’t need a warm up fight for Chris Eubank Jr.

“I am serious if any of those boxers and I mean any bad mouthing me or questioning me lets settle it in the ring. We will put our purses on the line. If we have to do it a catch weight we can. I promise you now I will destroy any of those that are bad mouthing me. There are only three or four good boxers in Ireland and they are not the ones out talking about me. They are like myself they support Irish boxers not like these other jealous fighters.”

When asked if there was any particular fighter he took exception with, McDonagh was quick to highlight Meath’s Blaney.

He and Blaney have exchanged words before and the Ricky Hatton trained fighter has said he is willing to trade leather with the West Meath man.

“I would like to fight Blaney before the year is out. Maybe we can do in December. It can be winner takes all.”

McDonagh was that bit calmer when reflecting on the fight itself. He revealed the extent of his injury and claims he was content with how he was performing up and until the injury.

“I hurt my shoulder half half into the third round. I tried to fight on with it, but I could fee it getting worse.

“I don’t want to be out for long this year. I want to be out before the year is out. I may have tried to push it for round or two, but I tried to throw a jab and my shoulder just wasn’t working thats why I pulled out.

“I got up off the canvas after getting caught by a a good shot. I got up I stood my ground and I think I held my own with him. I was happy enough with how things were going until I got injured. I went into the fight with no sparring and when you take that into account I was very happy with how I was performing.”
