FAI Senior Cup

St Patricks Athletic-5

Inchicore Athletic-0

The score line might suggest it was a case of demolition derby, but St Patrick’s Atheltic had to work for their win over a gutsy Inchicore Athletic on Friday night.

The League of Ireland side put five past the Leinster Senior League third tier side to win the battle of Inchicore and progress to the second round of the FAI Senior Cup.

However, the amateur outfit held the dominant Saints scoreless for 55 minutes and were within touching distance with 14 minutes remaining.

As so often happens when non league sides take on the pros the extra fitness showed in the latter stages and Pats hit four in the last 15 minutes to put a massive gloss on the score sheet.

It might not be must consolation for the Inchicore players now, but the majority of the locally stocked club are Saints fans and in a round about way their team progressed in the competition.

The home side had the majority of the first half and had a chances via Killian and Ryan Brennan in the opening 10 minutes. However, The Core settled and firmed up at the back and despite not seeing much of the ball limited the number of chances the hosts created for the next 10.

However, Pats would have felt frustrated they didn’t take a lead into the break after Simon Madden, Ian Turner and Brennan all had chances.

A red card one minute after the restart then made an uphill battle a mountain climb for the amateur side.

Leon Fahey Byrne’s red meant Inchicore had to play the final 45 with just 10 men. Within 10 minutes the deadlock was finally broken as Markey found the back of the net.

Pats then introduced Conor Clifford and Jake Keegan and the latter put some distance between the sides with 15 minutes to go.

The floods gates opened slightly thereafter and a Conan Byrne brace sandwiched Keegan’s second as the home side put some gloss on the score line.
