Ireland register second weekend win over England
Ireland beat England 5-4 in last night’s sold-out international at the Clann Naofa BC in Dundalk.
Olympic Youth silver medallist Ciara Ginty, Chloe Commisskey, Shauna Blaney and Shauna O’Callaghan won on the night.
European and European Union medallist Amy Broadhurst, who TKO’d India Wilkinson at the National Stadium on Friday, received a walkover over the same opponent twenty four hours later.
Ginty, an ex AIBA World Junior champion, showed her class last evening and Commisskey and English bantam Jade Ashmore were involved in a see-saw classic. Blaney and O’Callaghan shone in the junior class.
All of the Irish squad gave fine accounts of themselves against top class opposition.
Thanking England for traveling for the double header in Dublin and Dundalk, coach Liam Brereton described last night’s meeting as very competitive and thanked Jim O’Neill and the Clann Naofa BC for their outstanding hospitality.
Irish coach and Clann Naofa chief seconds Jim O’Neill hailed the performances of both sides.
“Shauna (O’Callaghan) played a captain’s part. It was a tremendous performance from her and a well deserved win amid an electric atmosphere, he said.
“The Irish squad were brilliant against a quality England side. Both team deserve enormous credit. I would like to thank everyone for turning out to support the Irish team on a memorable evening of international boxing.”
