Eoghan Quinn recorded his second win in 24 hours to book his ticket into the quarter-finals of the European Schoolboy Championships in Zagreb, Croatia today.

But 2015 European Schoolboy silver medalist Steve Cairns, who also won Sunday, was controversially beaten on a unanimous decision by Russia’s Maksim Demenenko at the last 16 stage.

Quinn saw off Italy’s Matteo Ferraro in impressive fashion. Jerome Lonergan-Gartland also advanced, the Tipperary prospect beating Bulgaria’s Krasimer Dzhurov over three rounds.

Thomas Donovan pulled out all the stops but was edged out on a split decision by Ignas Liaudanskis of Lithuania tonight and Shane O’Gorman was beaten by Serbia’s Nermin Ajetovic in a close 50kg bout.

Six Irish boxers, led by team captain Gerard McDonagh, will be in action tomorrow in Zagreb.

McDonagh, Paddy Myers, Francis Maughan, Jason Irwin, Matthew Tyndall and John Sweeney are between the ropes.

Boxing begins at 1pm and 5pm (Irish time).
