Leo Santa Cruz outlines “great gameplan” for Carl Frampton rematch
Leo Santa Cruz [32(18)-0-1] has outlined what he believes to be two keys to victory when he rematches Carl Frampton next weekend in Las Vegas
‘El Terremoto’ takes on the Belfast man at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on January 28th for the WBA featherweight title which he lost in their first bout last Summer.
That July night in New York, Frampton [23(14)-0] managed to negate and avoid much of Santa Cruz’s high output and scored with the cleaner, heavier punches to take a majority decision win at the Barclays Centre.
The Mexican-American believes that, this time round, if he manages to adjust his range, and effectively tire Frampton through bodywork, that he will exact revenge.
Santa Cruz told IFL TV that “we have a great gameplan, not getting inside with him, using my reach, using combinations, I’m going to work the body this time from the first round. I think right there, if I work the body, he wont be able to move around as much because I will break him down with the body shots and he’s going to have no other choice but to stay there.”
“In the first fight, I fought his fight. I stayed in his reach, I didn’t use my height. I’m way longer than him, taller than him. If I’m smart, I’m going to use my reach and I’m not going to let him catch me with those punches that can knock me out. I’m going to be smart, cautious, not get caught with those big punches. I have to go out there, use my distance, throw my combinations, step outside quick, be quick, that’s what we’ve got to do.”
