1966: Belfast boxing legend Jim McCourt won light welterweight gold at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jaimaca. The 1964 Olympic bronze medalist defeated Ghanaian Aaron Popoola in the final following wins in the earlier rounds over Ugandan Alex Odhiambo, Guyana’s Ivelaw Glen, and Belize’s David Dakers.
At the same Games there was silver for Belfast feather Paddy Maguire, who defeated Scot Hugh Baxter, Canadian Walter Johnston, and Jamaica’s Harold West before falling to Kenyan Philippe Waruinge
There was also bronze for Lisburn lightweight Sammy Lockhart, Belfast welter Frank Young, and Newry heavy Danny McAlinden.
