Callum Walsh wins GOLD at European Junior Championships
Callum Walsh won a wonderful gold medal this afternoon at the European Junior Championships in Bulgaria.
The Cork lightweight had his hand raised in Albena after he upset the home favourite Stilyan Hristov.
The Riverstown switch hitter showed ever facet of his game, counter-punching and going on the offensive across the three rounds
Southpaw Walsh looked to counter in the opener as Hristov tore into him. The Irish boxer hit the canvas in the closing seconds, but it was ruled a slip
A frantic start to the second saw both trade before the fight reverted to a cagier affair, with Walsh having more success.
Walsh finished extremely strongly, rocking Hristov’s head back numerous times in the closing seconds.
The Bulgarian felt he had won it, but it was Walsh who was given the verdict on a unanimous decision to cap off a brilliant tournament for him – with coaches Billy McClean and Dimitri Dmitruk going wild in celebration in the corner.
There was no joy however for Sligo flyweight Dean Clancy who was edged out following a furious three rounds with Russian southpaw Boris Kariban.
Following the announcement of the split decision verdict, the Ballinacarrow fighter stood aghast, arms outstretched in the centre of the ring before raising his hand as if to celebrate a win.
