Qais Ashfaq cries Conlan robbery
Belfast bantamweight Mick Conlan yesterday won a glorious gold medal at the European Championships yesterday in Bulgaria. While most had Conlan running out a clear winner via unanimous decision, his vanquished for, England’s Qais Asfaq, felt that his hand should have been raised.
After the medal ceremony, the Leeds boxer took to twitter to give his views on the result
Gutted ain’t the word! Felt I won the fight, many other countries came to me and said the same! I should be European Champion! Heart broken!

However Ashfaq doesn’t bear any ill-feeling towards the Clonard ABC man, elaborating on Instagram:
“Well done to Micheal Conlan, He’s a class fella and a nice kid & I’m the first to Congratulate him, Well done pal & also well done on winning boxer of the tournament”
In fairness to the 22 year old – who now has a European silver to add to his Commonwealth silver and European Games bronze – emotions often run high immediately after a fight and we are sure that once he re-watches the bout he will accept that Conlan was the rightful winner.
